On April 6, BYD confirmed that it had acquired a large auto-mold factory owned by Japan's Hagiwara. Details of the purchase amount will be announced later. Byd is buying one of Hagiwara's four factories in Japan, called the Kanabayashi Plant, which makes the molds that form steel plates for major car bodies, such as hoods.

Wang Jianjun, a spokesman for BYD, said in an interview that high-precision molds made in Japan will be shipped to BYD's production line in China, which currently has enough capacity to handle more than 400, 000 vehicles a year, and the company will send Chinese employees to Japan to learn mould-making techniques.
